The formation of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission was a major step forward for telecoms in the country. While the commission is under something of a legal cloud, it has received the green light to begin operations. After the disappointing and frustrating experiences of its forerunner, there is hope that the NBTC can help to revive several parts of the broadcasting industry in general.
One of the early problems is certain to be the lack of specific duties. To be successful, the commission will have to resist the temptation to micro-manage. It should guide but not burden a generally healthy, needed sector that is already part of the country’s economy, culture and social activities.
